| Florida bankers brace for FDIC hit
| Area bankers are waiting to see if they will take a hit from a major one-time assessment from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to insure their deposits. Charles Brown III, president of Insignia Bank in Sarasota, says the special assessment proposed to help shore up the FDIC’s insurance fund would translate to a six-figure payout from his bank. “We pay about $70,000 (annually) right now, and it could be anywhere from $200,000 to $300,000,” Brown says. “It would have a significantly negative impact in a banker’s eyes.”

| Development bill divides Floridians
| More than 300,000 residential units sit empty across Florida, 64,588 properties were in foreclosure last month, second only to Nevada, and real estate prices are still plummeting. Nonetheless, state lawmakers are making it easier for developers to add even more. Gov. Charlie Crist now has a bill on his desk, which he said Wednesday he "probably will" sign, that would ease government oversight and exempt many areas from a requirement that says builders must pay for road improvements if traffic generated by their projects exceeds the local capacity.

Tests Laid On Less Stress Than Fed Forecast
| The stress tests of the 19 largest banks assumed that unemployment in the worst case would be 8.9% in 2009. Minutes of the Federal Reserve's April meeting show that the governors of the Federal Reserve, and the presidents of the Fed's 12 regional banks, were working with a projection that the jobless rate would be between 9.2% and 9.6%.

| Jamacian private sector leaders blast sloppy civil servants
| Chairman of the state-run Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) and industry veteran, Godfrey Dyer, believes that the root of the problem lies with persons who are expected to facilitate government initiatives, but don't due to political reasons. "In Jamaica, we have a government that went into power nearly two years now, using the same tired people that were in there for 18 years or more to execute a new dream and nothing, or very little, is happening," said Dyer, who called on Prime Minister Bruce Golding to take "strong action" in replacing some public servants in key positions.
