South Florida personal bankruptcies post slight rise in August
Consumer bankruptcies in South Florida were up slightly in August compared to a month earlier, but still 33 percent higher than they were a year ago, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court's Southern District in Miami.

Clunkers gone, appliances next
Federally funded rebates to coax us into buying resource-saving appliances are still a few months from rollout, but the $300 million program already is generating buzz at local businesses. Details of the program, nicknamed "dollars for dishwashers," will largely be decided by the states. Florida's Energy and Climate Commission is hammering out the rules, facing an Oct. 15 deadline to get its plan to the U.S. Department of Energy.

First-time tax credit denied
Buyers expecting to get the first-time home buyer tax credit should check the fine print. They may not qualify. The fine print of the tax provision, which gives a credit of up to $8,000 to buyers who have not owned a home in the last three years, disqualifies individuals whose spouses have owned a home during that same period.

FPL seeks to raise late fees to stop customer deliquency; make $92 million in 2010
This year, Florida Power & Light Co. expects to collect $44 million in late fees from customers. Next year, it expects to make $92 million. As the economy has worsened, the number of customers paying late has risen. One in four paid late in December.

Homebuilder taps new Chicago leader
A Detroit-area native who grew up in a home his father built has been tapped to head the Chicago operations of the newly combined Pulte Homes Inc. and Centex Corp. Steve Atchison, 40, was named president of Illinois/Michigan for Pulte Homes last month when Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Pulte bought Centex in a $1.3-billion deal that created the nation’s biggest homebuilder.

University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee report finds huge mismatch between job seekers, openings
For each full-time job opening of any kind in central Milwaukee, there are 25 unemployed job seekers, says the report from UWM's Employment and Training Institute, prepared for southeastern Wisconsin's Regional Workforce Alliance. That 25-to-1 ratio is up from 7-to-1 in a comparable 2006 study. For Milwaukee County, the gap between job hunters and openings has jumped to 13-to-1, from 3-to-1 three years ago.

A slight decrease in Initial Claims
In the week ending Aug. 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 570,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 574,000. The 4-week moving average was 571,250, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 567,250.

Costa Rican increased Imports Push Up Trade Deficit
Costa Rica imported over $15.3 billion worth of goods and services in 2008, the highest level of imports in the country's history. At the same time, Costa Rican exports, valued at $9.5 billion, also reached their highest level ever.

Mexico Housing ‘Stable,’ Moody’s Says; Builders Rise
Desarrolladora Homex SAB, Mexico’s largest homebuilder, rose 3.4 percent to 79.27 pesos. Corporacion Geo, the second- biggest builder, added 2.2 percent to 31.08 pesos. The Habita index has surged 50 percent this year, compared with a 25 percent gain on the benchmark Bolsa index.

Australian growth beats forecasts
The Australian economy grew by more than expected in the second quarter of 2009, boosted by increases in household consumption and business investment. The economy expanded by 0.6% in the three months to June from the previous quarter, the government said.
